GLAZA NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

by Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association

We are so glad that 2020 is finally in the rearview mirror! After a very tough year, we are grateful the Los Angeles Zoo is open again and look forward to seeing you among the many thousands getting back outdoors and reconnecting with nature at the Zoo.

Every cloud has a silver lining, however, and the pandemic challenged the Zoo’s Learning & Engagement team to work with schools, educators, Zoo staff, members, donors and others to explore virtual education opportunities. This work has been so successful that it will continue long after 2020 is behind us.

In a typical year, the Zoo hosts nearly 130,000 students on school field trips, with thousands more experiencing docent-led tours. The goal of this programming is to foster lasting relationships between our communities, the environment, and animals by ensuring equitable access to nature.

Born of necessity, virtual Zoo programming began last spring as an experiment that has grown into a fantastic tool for Zoo educators! GLAZA helped fund a virtual programming studio at the Zoo that allows the Learning & Engagement team to implement best practices in their use of technology as they connect with students, families and many other audiences.

The Zoo now offers virtual programs that students can pursue at their own pace, and others involving real-time classroom experiences. There are a variety of virtual field trips available where you can choose your own adventure, and docent-led Zoom classroom programs for face-to-face interaction. GLAZA and the Zoo have worked hand-in-hand to make all these virtual programs available and have reached thousands of students so far.

GLAZA made it through 2020 because our very best friends and supporters – you – stood by us. And although the Zoo is now open, your support today is incredibly important as attendance caps, reduced hours and canceled events continue to take their toll on our finances.

Your generosity made a huge difference in 2020 and helped us in countless ways. We know we will get back to normal one day, but to do so, we still need your help. Will you please consider making a gift to support GLAZA's annual fund today? We can’t thank you enough for all you do for the Zoo and GLAZA!

Gratefully,

Tom Jacobson
President, Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association
